Dearest Mother:-
Like this place better every way than Lee. Fellows are coming here from
Texas and as far west as Iowa. Have seen all the home boys here. Arch
Ridgeway is driving the Col. car and took us all a ride last night. Called
on Jack Kennedy and Jim Zundel and they surely treated us fine. We have
not been assigned to any Reg. yet and if they make a machine gun camp out
of this we will be sent back to Gettysburg they say. The weather here has
cooled since we came in, the day we came was the hottest they had so far
this summer and we have been freezing the last two nights. Did you get my
blanket? They gave us three heavy blankets so I thot I would send mine
home till I needed it. I went to a band concert by the Tenth Reg. band
last night and they can play. This is a regular summer resort and you
surely see some swells. The officers here are better I think than Lee
because they are mostly Regular Army guys. N. G. guys have to step some to
keep up. The company we are with are from Franklin Pa. and are all good
fellows. At Lee the fellows fought all the time and here they will do
anything for you. The Gen. lectured to the fellows yesterday and told us
that there wasn't any N.A, N.G. or U.S. any more and we were all in the
U.S. Army and in it to the same end. It will be six weeks tomorrow since
we left home and here is the sad point. I haven't been paid and would like
to have a few dollars because we won't be paid now for another month. In a
few words, I'm broke, and would rather borrow from you than the other
fellows. I don't want much, only enough to buy a few essentials you know.
When you write to tell me about the wedding and also whether you got the
suitcase and other stuff. I will have to mail this now so will close.
