Dear Mother: -

Just a line to let you know that I am still as busy as a one-armed paper hanger. We didn't get our day off yesterday and worked all day today. We are starting back to the trenches today. We will be gone till Wed. so any mail will be off for a while. Sure is steady work in this outfit. We are to be inspected this week by the Gen. and if the division passes OK we will be on our way. An officer was here today to take our names and education and picked Hump and I from this unit. I don't know what we will get out of it. It is warm again now and we are ready to start on our hike. Can you imagine this skinny frame of mine with fifty pounds on it. Our shoes are hobnailed and weigh ten pounds apiece. Say, don't tell Ruth any thing more that I write home, cause she writes it back here, you know. You cant imagine how quick they nickname you here. Instead of being "Wap" to these guys they call me "Tuesday". Meatless, you get it? Hump goes as "Whitey". Oh! We can stand it with the rest of them, I judge. They had us over to the Hospital this A.M. to find out if there was anything wrong that we knew of. I told them I was fine. I don't want any home guards duty for mine. Well, I must close and get at it so with love to all I am

Your loving son
