My Dear Parents:-
We are still lying around waiting patiently to see just what they are
going to do with us. Since our landing in this country we have been used
entirely as combat troops and for that reason we think we may go home soon
because the combat is over now, Let us hope so! While the fight was on I
never gave a thought to myself and could eat anything. Now that things are
so quiet I've been on the bum most of the time and my appetite is nix.
What I want is some good grub, well cooked!
My cold is better but my legs are still sore. Just a touch of rheumatics,
I guess. It is a monotonous life to be forced to be idle after months of
such strenuous work and it sure gets to you. Everyone is ready to fight
their best friends.
I had a letter from Florence yesterday. She is surely in love with her
job. Wish I could find myself like that when I come back. Had an Xmas card
from Florence H. John never got over did he? I also had a card from
several others and was glad to be remembered as to Xmas Greetings. Geo.
Brennen writes me from Cleveland and says he is out of luck for a trip
across or a commission and that I should be glad I got in when I did and
missed the Aviation.
There isn't a thing to write about, mother. We are quartered here in an
old ruined town and there isn't a thing to do. There is a young Corporal
here who was a newspaper man back home and who is writing the history of
the 112th Inf. in the Venango Herald in Franklin, Pa. paper. It is very
complete diary of our Reg. and you can have the papers sent you. I think
the story will start, I believe, about Jan 1st. Grace can find out by
writing to them.
Also I enclose some of the orders that were sent out to tell us that the
war was over.
[these items were missing from the
letter.]
And then there is a list of all the
towns we passed through on our wanderings over here. It will fill up
because there is absolutely no news. I have written to Ruth and to Grandma
Humphries and soon when I am in better humor I'll write you a livelier
epistle. This should be your best Xmas and now lets hear you sing: " Joy
to the World" etc.
