"Somewhere in France"

Dear Sis: -
So you see you will never serve in France as a Red Cross Nurse during the great war. Its all over! You should have seen the celebration when the guns were through firing. Every one went wild! One great cheer followed the last round and it came from both sides of the line. The Germans were just as glad as we were that everything was over. I know your intentions of coming over were good and it would have been a great experience but hard work all the way thru.
We are absolutely lost since we were taken off the lines and have nothing at all to do but keep the fire going & swap lies. Wild rumours follow each other from one billet to another and no one believes a thing. Personally I think we will be on our way back to join you before long. I sincerely hope so at least because now that hostilities are over I want to go back "toot-sweet".
We wander around here like a bunch of lost sheep and the days seem like weeks. One thing sure we will never fight again. The Huns say they are thru forever and instead of going after them now it is all we can do to keep them from coming over thru our lines to eat. You should see the stragglers, prisoners, & refugees come in that they have turned loose. All kinds of specimens in all kinds of garb.
I feel very tough when I think Hump and I are separated for good. He had a hard part to play but did his best till the last they tell me. Bob Ramsay got it too. Hope you all came thru the epidemic O.K. and will be in good trim for this reunion about February. I’ll have a blue serge by Easter! Love to all and tell your friend Helen, whose picture I have here, I like her a lot, already. Me for her! A soldier and a nurse. Not bad. eh! Love to all.
