[This Letter is extremely faded and almost
impossible to make out.]
Dear Mother:-
Just a short note to let you know that I am well and on the second big
jump toward home. We were reviewed by Gen. Pershing and the next day I was
sent ahead to locate places in this camp for our regiment.
[Illegible text] is on the same detail and we have been traveling
together for the past week. Fratz and Graft are here also. I saw
[Illegible text] today but haven't found Graft yet. Our whole Division will be in this huge
camp until we are cleaned up and ready to sail. This will take about 4
weeks here. I went through the "cootie" machine yesterday and am fine
again. Our brigade is in a camp of 1000 tents, and we have fine weather
for camping here. We had a long train ride by way of Charmount and Tours
and landed here and am tired. It took us four days. It is a great camp
here and in this area they handle 200,000 men at one time. The system of
processing this many men for shipment home is wonderful to witness. Just
as I am writing the 30th Div. is arriving
[Illegible text] with their bands playing
"Homeward Bound" and every mother's son is in great spirits. You can hear
them singing all along the line. Along the
[Illegible text] are
[Illegible text] who
are detailed to stay here for another
[Illegible text]
and their
faces display the other feelings. Our outfits are well caught up with Gen.
[Illegible text] work and we expect to leave earlier than the scheduled 4
weeks. We haven't heard of course.
[Next line is faded too much to read.]
Am looking forward to the boys bringing mail when they come down. We
landed here Thursday and have found our section so have nothing to do
until the rest get here the later part of the week. I hope you have heard
something from me by this time and you can look for me to hit that side
soon after you read this. Oh! It won't be long until the reunion now.
Ben's outfit is also on the way home. Love to you all and may all go well
till we meet again!
