Dearest Mother: -
Haven't received any mail from you since last Sat. We had a bit of hard
luck, and about four sacks of our mail were lost. I suppose some of the
letters you wrote were in the lot. The weather still remains warm here and
I am feeling fine. I think often of home and especially this time of year
when the parks are open and soon time for the picnics to begin. This may
be the last opportunity I will have to write to you for a week or so, I’ll
be very busy for about that long. After that we hope letter writing will
be an easier matter. I am way behind in my correspondence and would like
to catch up. You don't know how glad I was to get your letters. The only
thing that puzzles me is where that picture of Grace and Ben was taken. I
would like to have a picture of all of you if you can get one small enough
for me to carry easily. Hope to see some of the other boys in a few weeks
again. And maybe some day I will meet up with Chung or Hilby.
[names indistinct]
I suppose Gilbert and the other
fellows are home from school again. Glad Slaughter and dad are at it
together again. Give my best to the
[illegible]
and tell him we will talk it over when I come back. Also, my regards to
Newman and tell him I am following his fatherly advice to the letter. I
would have written you for more money before I left but thot that I owed
you enough already. I got along OK and here we don't need any. There is
nothing to buy when you have it. When does Florence get her vacation? I
suppose she will need it. Give her my best love and her brother will write
as soon as he gets time. Same to Ben and Albert. They must be cutting
close the mark when they take Earl Serena (sp?) and those guys. I guess Overholt is still at home. The "Sammies"
[US soldiers – from “Uncle Sam”] are
hot on old "Bill's"
[German
soldiers – From “Kaiser Bill”] trail from reports and
soon things will be going the other way. Give my love to all and let me
have the news regularly. Hope I can get you a letter often soon.
Best love from
