My Dear Parents;-
This is just a short letter because I am so busy sightseeing in this
wonderful place that I am crowded for time. I'll give you a short outline
of what all there is here to see. This is the greatest, and before the
war, the most fashionable resort in France. It is the second greatest in
Europe. Monte Carlo alone exceeds it. Here you can take all the baths of
mineral water that millionaires used to journey miles across the seas to
visit. We are placed in hotels where royal couples used to honeymoon. This
P.M. I went up Mt. Revard (5170ft) and the altitude didn't affect my
heart. From this mountain you can gaze upon Mt. Blanc and into the Swiss
and Italian Alps. Wonderful sight. All you can do is just stand and gaze
as if you were in a trance. Snow clad hills that rear their crests way
above the clouds. Some of the pictures will tell you more of the great
sights here than I can. In the Casino here, which is now occupied by our
Y.M.C.A., Harry Thaw lost half a million in an hour. It used to be one of
the biggest gambling rooms in the world. It covers almost half as much
space as Loucks Park and under this roof the “Y" has vaudeville, movies,
writing rooms, and last night in this magnificant ball room we danced with
real American girls who are here working for the "Y” , Red Cross, etc.
When I get back to the lines I'll write you all about my trip. Today I
mailed you a few souvenirs. The handkerchief s are for you, Grace, &
Florence and also one for Ethel and another spoon for Bob Graft. Hope you
are all well and tho “pleasures and palaces, we may room, be it ever so
humble there's no place like home".
